Actos and Bladder Cancer

You may be entitled to an Actos lawsuit if you were prescribed Actos for more than one year and have been diagnosed with bladder cancer.

People with type 2 diabetes may be prescribed Actos along with diet and exercise to improve blood glucose. Actos works on your liver by stopping the organ from producing more blood sugar than it needs. Actos also helps your body to make better use of insulin. Actos is prescribed so your blood glucose does what it’s supposed to do and doesn’t build up in your bloodstream.

While Actos might be a popular choice to help manage type 2 diabetes, the drug is not without adverse side effects including bladder cancer.
On June 15, 2011 the FDA informed the public that the use of Actos (pioglitazone) for more than one year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. Information about this risk will be added to the Warnings and Precautions section of the label for pioglitazone-containing medicines. The patient Medication Guide for these medicines will also be revised to include information on the risk of bladder cancer.

The FDA also recommended to healthcare professionals:

  • Do not use pioglitazone in patients with active bladder cancer.
  • Use pioglitazone with caution in patients with a prior history of bladder cancer. The benefits of blood sugar control with pioglitazone should be weighed against the unknown risks for cancer recurrence.
