Hydrocodone
Hydrocodone is a drug that is not available on its own, but rather only in combination with other medications. Hydrocodone is part of two different classes of drugs: opiate analgesics which are used to treat pain and antitussives which are used to suppress coughing.
Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen Combination Drugs
Hydrocodone and acetaminophen combination drugs are commonly prescribed in the United States. Vicodin is an example of a Hydrocodone and acetaminophen combination drug that is used to treat mild to moderate pain. In January 2011, the FDA warned healthcare providers about the potential dangers of acetaminophen combination drugs. The concern is that patients who are prescribed these drugs may overdose on acetaminophen and end up with serious liver problems.
Potential Side Effects
Hydrocodone, while commonly prescribed, is associated with serious side effects independent of acetaminophen overdose. Specifically, as an opiate drug, Hydrocodone may
- Become addictive. It is important that the drug be prescribed in the minimal effective dosage for the minimal amount of time.
- Cause a change in heartbeat that is dangerous.
- Cause long term hearing loss.
- Cause potentially life threatening respiratory problems.
- Cause changes in hormone levels.
- Create a number of other, serious side effects including but not limited to:
- Vision changes
- Weakness
- Seizures
- Severe stomach pains, nausea or vomiting
- Severe headaches
- Anxiety
- Dizziness
- Hallucinations
Changes to Hydrocodone Availability in Recent Years
Until the mid 2000s, Hydrocodone was readily available in many different cough medications. Since 2006, more than three quarters of these medications have been removed from the market and the FDA has issued strong warnings about providing cough medicine with Hydrocodone to children.
If you, or your child, has been injured by a drug containing Hydrocodone then it is important to seek immediate medical attention and to follow your doctor's directions about how best to control your pain or your cough symptoms.
