Yaz Marketing Lawyers
Yaz, a relatively new form of birth control, has grown in popularity since it can treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). However, the FDA has issued a warning to its manufacturer, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, as one of their marketing campaigns has included information that is confusing for consumers. Some women experience serious Yaz side effects, so it is important for patients to fully understand how this form of birth control should be used.
Should I use Yaz?
Yaz is effective as a method of birth control, and it can be used to treat PMDD and moderate acne. However, it isn't the right kind of birth control for everyone. Yaz uses a different kind of hormone called drospirenone (DRSP), which can raise potassium in the body to a very high level. This can be extremely dangerous for people with kidney, liver, or adrenal disease, and it can cause serious interactions with other drugs. Yaz should only be taken if a medical professional has explained these risks to you and determined that your potential for problems is very low.
Can Yaz be used to treat PMS?
No. This is what caused the confusion over the Yaz commercials. Originally, Bayer aired a commercial called "Balloons" and using the song "We Aren't Gonna Take It" in the background. The commercial showed a number of balloons symbolizing PMDD symptoms, and women were box-kicking the balloons to show that Yaz stops these symptoms. However, the commercial was very unclear, as many of the symptoms shown are found in patients suffering from PMS as well. The commercial seemed to imply that Yaz could be used to treat PMS, not just PMDD, which is more severe than PMS.
Do these commercials still air?
Soon after these commercials first started to air, Bayer received a warning from the FDA that they were unclear and needed to be removed or edited. Bayer chose to take the commercials off the air and replace them with commercials that explained the problem. Their new commercial, featuring a woman talking to the camera, explains that Yaz can only be used to treat PMDD, not PMS. However, before the commercials were removed, many women decided to start taking Yaz to control PMS symptoms.
