Simvastatin: FDA cautions and Zocor complications lawsuits

Healthcare professionals should be aware of the potential increased risk of muscle injury (rhabdo) with the 80 mg dose of simvastatin compared to lower doses of simvastatin and possibly other statin drugs; rhabdomyolysis is a rare adverse event reported with all statins; adhere to the contraindications of drugs that should not be used along with simvastatin.

Simvastatin is sold as a single-ingredient generic medication and as the brand-name, Zocor. It is also sold in combination with ezetimibe as Vytorin and niacin as Simcor.

Do not use simvastatin with these medications:

  • Itraconazole
  • Ketoconazole
  • Erythromycin
  • Clarithromycin
  • Telithromycin
  • HIV protease inhibitors
  • Nefazodone

Do not use more than 10 mg of simvastatin with these medications:

  • Gemfibrozil
  • Cyclosporine
  • Danazol

Do not use more than 20 mg of simvastatin with these medications:

  • Amiodarone
  • Verapamil

Do not use more than 40 mg of simvastatin with this medication:

  • Diltiazem

Patients currently using 80 mg simvastatin should know that rhabdo is a rare side effect reported with all statin medications; call your healthcare provider if you have muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, dark or red colored urine, or unexplained tiredness; talk to your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about Zocor or simvastatin.

If you or a family member are suffering from rhabdo or kidney damage from simvastatin, you may have a Zocor complications lawsuit. Contact the experienced Zocor attorneys at Anapol Schwartz for a free case evaluation.
